Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a magical stop-motion animated musical, written by Tim Burton and released in 1993. The film follows Jack Skellington, the leader of a holiday-themed world, known as Halloween Town, which is full of monsters, vampires, witches and werewolves. Jack becomes bored of organizing and leading a frightful celebration every Halloween. Whilst contemplating his repetitive lifestyle he wanders deep into the forest and stumbles upon a portal to the world of Christmas Town.

Jack is absolutely stunned by this wondrous new world and once back in Halloween Town, he attempts to combine the two holidays, with disastrous results.

The film boasts many tuneful and memorable songs, all written by frequent Burton collaborator Danny Elfman. Stand-out songs are ‘This is Halloween’ (the opening number) and ‘What’s this’. Watch the film and you’ll be humming the songs for days.

Jack Skellington is, by far, the most iconic character. He’s immediately identifiable by his pin-stripe outfit, thin boney body, long limbs and wonderfully expressive skull-like face. Highlights of The Nightmare Before Christmas are its stunning visuals and brilliantly realised characters (it was nominated for an Academy Award for Visual Effects).

Since its release, the film has become a well-known production and has earned the status of a cult classic. And rightly so!
